Story is as much a part of us as our bodies are. Each of us is a unique and varied novel ripe with chapters about where we came from. Who we are. Our dreams and hopes and wishes and fears. Our mundane everydays and our wild and crazy adventures. We have interspersed into our pages heartaches and celebrations, triumph and turmoil. There are things we are proud of and others we most certainly are not. But they are our stories nonetheless, and whether we write them with monotony or fervor, the inkwell of the pen of our life never truly runs dry. The nib will never fray or get worn. We are history. Living. Breathing. Being. We are the torn and creased and battered and pristine pages in the most perfect book. Story is the reason I’m a photographer – I have the ability to capture a moment that will...
in pictures | the incredible year that was 2013.
I don’t know that I’m ready to summarize this past year in words. I don’t know that I’ve quite found the right ones just yet, and to be honest, I’m not certain I ever will. So I’m going to do the best at can right this moment, and allow my photographs to speak for me. I have exponentially more favorites than I could ever share in one blog post, so here are a few of the ones that stood out to me – in no particular order (and not including any iPhone or instagram photos.) It’s hard to believe that each one of these stories happened this year. Some feel as though they occurred ages ago, and others, still only just yesterday. Adventures in Film | The Gipsons
It’s usually easy for me to find words to accompany a blog post, but tonight I’m at a loss. I can’t seem to find the phrasing. The prose. The words that, when strung together perfectly, would accurately summarize my meeting Suzanne, our time together in Colorado, and the weekend I spent with her family in Ohio. They aren’t coming to me. I can tell you that Suzanne is an incredibly talented photographer and has a quiet happiness about her. That her husband Brant is a wonderful musician and has a perfect sense of humor. That their home is filled with magic. I can tell you about about their two children and the joy with which they embrace each day. And I can tell you that both of them, a mess of lovely hair and big eyes, greeted me with cautious welcome, excited curiosity and shy laughter. Which was absolutely and...
derrek + jenn + the day stella met the boy she’s going to marry
This family is my family. These insanely awesome people are forever imprinted on my heart and are the kind of friends that everyone should have. Loving. Honest. Hilarious. Derrek + Jenn are incredible creatives and they make beautiful photographs. Derrek is likely the best wedding cinematographer around (he shot our Vow Renewal), and although he lives in Florida I recommend him to every single one of my couples. They came to Minnesota in September to shoot a wedding, and we spent a few fleeting days laughing, ugly cat sweater shopping, cards against humanity playing, shooting, dreaming, and sushi eating. Our time was together was far too short, but I am thankful for their visit, their friendship, and the fact that they live in a warm climate, a winter is upon us and February might just be a perfect time to make a trip south…...
