Five.
On Saturday Elena turned five. FIVE! My oldest daughter has reached the age of actual childhood. An infant or toddler no longer she’s officially growing up – though, like her mother, her stature would suggest otherwise. Normally on her birthday I write a blog post to her – recalling the last year of her life and offering wisdom for her future. Last year, I imparted the wisdom of Tina Fey upon her, and I recounted her favorite improvisational story based on her affinity towards a very un-ladylike bodily function. This year isn’t any different. Well, she is different, but my penchant for sappy recollection remains unchanged, so if you’re not into letters-written-to-children-on-blogs-when-they-can’t-even-read-them, then I suggest you turn away now. This is going to get sappy…. And so, without further ado, for your fifth birthday, I offer you this Elena: You are absolutely a work of art, child. Your smile, your laugh, the way you create...
Meg+Geoff’s St Paul College Club Wedding
It’s been almost a year since I met Meg. She contacted me last fall to discuss the details of her wedding day – to talk about the day she was planning to marry her best friend, and the best, most wonderful and unexpected thing to happen to her since…well…ever. She wanted to talk about her life with Geoff. I knew the second I saw her that I was going to fall head over heels in friend love with this girl. She just exudes joy and is constantly laughing (even at my horrible jokes!). As she discussed the details of her day, I found myself interrupting to her to practically shout, “PICK ME!” I have no shame (apparently). But Meg did pick me, and on the last Saturday in September I watched as her dream came true at the St Paul College Club. I was so honored to document this day....
Eleven years. one lifetime – our surprise vow renewal
Not too long ago I got an itch – I wanted photos, good ones, of DRL and I. We aren’t that couple that has a million and one arm-extended-say-cheese phone photos of our adventures together. We would be hard pressed to find even a handful of those. What we do have of us together – where I’m not all puffy and post-explusion-of-a-wombfruit – is limited to photos of us at friends’ weddings and our own lackluster wedding photos. Our wedding photos, though properly exposed and edited well, and though they cost nearly what I charge for a wedding now, aren’t awesome by any stretch of the imagination. They didn’t capture anything special about us – about our wedding day. They’re simply pretty pictures. And I wanted more for us. While we’re still young (read: while I’m still relatively pretty, free from significant wrinkles, and only slightly jiggly). DRL didn’t quite...
